A leader whose example has inspired
countless future leaders, Christine Johnson McPhail demonstrates a tireless
commitment to the education of others and the advancement of community
colleges.
As founder of and professor for the
Community College Doctoral Leadership Program at Morgan State University, Dr. McPhail was singly responsible
for graduating more than 30 doctoral
students—a record number of African
American graduates. Her inspiration and
effectiveness gave rise to a national
agenda on graduation rates among peer
and smaller institutions. Dr. McPhail
successfully created and managed the
State of Maryland’s first component
for the leadership training of midlevel
professionals, hosting more than 16 institutions across the state in community
college education and thus adding more
than 150 professionals to the ranks of
teaching and administration at community colleges.
Dr. McPhail currently serves as manag-
ing partner for The McPhail Group, a
higher education consulting firm. She
formerly served as president and chief
instructional officer at Cypress College
in southern California. She is emerita
professor for Morgan State University.
She is a strategy coach for six communi-
ty colleges in the Achieving the Dream:
Community Colleges Count initiative,
a national, multiyear effort focused on
helping students succeed. In addition,
she serves on the board of directors for
the American Association of Community
Colleges (A( ACC)
McPhail formerly served as the affirmative action officer, Division J, American
Education Research Association (AERA)
and on the editorial board for the
Community College Journal of Research and
Practice. She is the editor of a best-selling AACC publication, Establishing
and Sustaining Learning-Centered Community Colleges. McPhail is a recent recipient of the Terry O’Banion Leadership
Award from the League for Innovation
in the Community College. She was the
featured international keynote speaker
at the Guardian Further Education and
Skills Summit 2007 in the United Kingdom, where she spoke about the American Community College: Challenges and
Opportunities.
Dr. McPhail remains active in research
related to key elements of higher education: leadership, governance, teaching and learning. As the recipient of the
American Association of Community
Colleges’ 2010 Leadership Award, Dr.
Christine McPhail joins a distinguished
group whose dedication to ensuring the
success of community colleges through
the development of strong and passionate leaders is exemplary.
