Chaired by Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden and a
professor of English at Northern Virginia Community College, the
summit was intended to shed light on the role of community colleges in improving
the national graduation rate and putting Americans back to work amid a changed
economy.
“Community colleges are a key part of our economic vision for the future,” said
Biden. “I see firsthand the power of community colleges to change lives every single
day I am in the classroom.”
With enrollments of more than 8 million credit students a year, community
colleges remain the largest subsection of American higher education. As such, Biden
and other supporters, including President Obama, have stressed the importance of
these institutions to America’s economic recovery.
