Q&A
who I believe can be academically suc-
cessful if given the proper chance. But
it’s also tragic for our entire country,
which is in dire need of educated, high-
skilled workers. I think a visionary
approach is for community colleges to
create a three-year strategy and use the
first year as an established entryway to
prepare students that would not make
it through otherwise. This might mean
new collaborations with feeder high
schools and looking to new foundation
or government programs that encour-
age education innovation, such as the
federal Race to the Top fund. (For more
on Race to the Top, visit www2.ed.gov/
programs/racetothetop/ index.html.)
How important is the continued education of America’s disadvantaged and
minority youth to protecting America’s
economic edge? What can community
colleges do, as leaders, to help?
JOURNAL: Much has been made about
the global economy and pressures to
succeed against increased competition
from countries such as India and China.

CANADA: Community colleges must
ensure that young people have a stronger set of skills in math, science, and
technology, as well as in reading and
writing. Community colleges must also
ensure that more students are prepared and encouraged to get additional
education and training. Students should
not be led to assume that a two-year
diploma is the end of their education.

Community colleges can enhance their
relationships with four-year schools
and other training institutions. (For
more on successful community college
transfer programs, see “Higher Calling,”
p. 38.) They should particularly take
advantage of locally based opportunities
for secondary training and careers, such
as hotel management or health care.
