the Workforce projects more than
2. 8 million health care jobs will come
online in the next eight years. Workers
in pursuit of these positions are turning en masse to their local community
colleges for help.

They’ll need it. Dozens of health
care-related jobs promise good earnings
and sustainable careers, but identifying
these jobs is just the first step in a long
and often complicated process where
the slightest misstep can mean the
difference between landing a new
position in an exciting career field and
scraping by on unemployment.
“I think that students frequently
travel a circuitous path as they are
attempting to reach their destination,
because they often don’t know what
the straightest line is and how the
pieces connect,” says Carolyn O’Daniel,
dean of allied health and nursing at
Jefferson County Community and
Technical College in Lexington, Ky.
