Building Partnerships
Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, Calif., is proposing a new
location for its education center that would involve several
partners, including local workforce groups and other nonprofit
educational entities.
The Foothill-De Anza Community College District’s Board
of Trustees, which oversees the college, recently identified a site
at the former Onizuka Air Force Station as the preferred location
for the center. The board directed administrators to look into
what it would take to acquire the land.
Because the building would be funded through an existing
bond measure approved by voters in 2006, the only cost to the
district in obtaining the 9.6-acre lot would be the expense of
clearing and preparing the site for construction, estimated at
about $5 million.
Foothill-De Anza for several years has searched for a
permanent home for its education center, currently housed
at an aging facility at a satellite location operated by the
college, says Kurt Hueg, associate vice president for external
relations at Foothill College.
The college’s goal is to develop a regional center that
will serve individuals in Silicon Valley through programs that
help transition individuals from high school to community
college to the university and, eventually, the workplace.
The new center will provide a permanent location for
programs offered at the current satellite location. While
Hueg says it’s too early to give specifics on what new
programs the center will offer, the college envisions it as a
place “where we can have partnerships with other educa-
tional nonprofits and possibly public educational entities,
such as workforce groups and others.”
The center will offer year-round programs and services,
leveraging partnerships with other colleges and universities,
high schools, regional occupational programs, community-
based organizations, local government, business, and
industry.
“We see this as a model for partnerships with other
educational institutions and nonprofits and potentially other
public educational entities as well,” Hueg says.
