Bumphus Appointed To National Advisory Position Afamiliar face at the American As- sociation of Community Colleges (AACC) will lend his expertise on key educational issues in a new national advisory role. AACC President and CEO Walter G. Bumphus was appointed by U.s.

Department of homeland security secretary Janet Napolitano to the homeland security Academic Advisory Council.

“Dr. Bumphus’ extensive experi-
ence and expertise will make him a
valuable asset to the Council,” said
Napolitano. “I look forward to working
with him on these critical issues.”
The council is made up of notewor-
thy college and university presidents
and academic leaders who advise the
secretary and the department’s senior
leaders on key academic issues,
including student and recent graduate
recruitment; international students;
academic research; campus and
community resiliency, security, and
preparedness; and faculty exchanges.

Bumphus—who attended the group’s inaugural meeting in March— bolsters the advisory committee’s repertoire with more than 40 years of leadership experience in two-year college and four-year university settings. Other community college representatives on the panel include Dr. Rufus Glasper, chancellor of the Maricopa Community Colleges in Tempe, Ariz., and Dr. Gail O. Mellow, president of LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City, New York.
