As an example of the widening skills
gap, in the area of manufacturing, nearly
3. 5 million manufacturing jobs will need
to be filled over the next decade. Two
million are expected to go unfilled due
to the skills gap, according to a report
by Deloitte and the Manufacturing
Institute. The skills identified as most
deficient are technology/computer skills,
problem solving, basic technical training
and math skills.
RVCC is committed to training
tomorrow’s workforce today. The college
o;ers one of the nation’s first degrees in
cyber security healthcare IT, as well as a
variety of customized and just-in-time
workforce training, including a credit
certificate in advanced manufacturing. Students are able to complete the
certificate in nine months and continue
on to an associate degree. More than
80 percent of program completers are
employed immediately upon completion.
RVCC also provides an intense
nine-week work immersion program
resulting in earning an advanced
machine tool technology certificate and
28 credits towards an associate degree.
More than 100 students have taken
advantage of this pathway since fall
2013, demonstrating direct impact in
New Hampshire’s workforce.
However, technical training is only
one piece necessary to close the skills
gap. Employers also need workers with
“soft” skills.
A WorkReadyNH grant has funded
soft skills training for more than
300 students, tuition free. During a
60-hour class, students gain competencies such as interpersonal skills,
conflict resolution, teamwork, ethics,
communication, problem-solving and
customer service. There are more than
2,000 WorkReadyNH graduates in New
Hampshire and 99 percent of them say
the course training and experience met
or exceeded their expectations.
FUELING THE ECONOMY
It’s not enough to fill jobs, though.
Community colleges also have to be
job creators. Actively supporting and
enhancing economic development
within the regions they serve is yet
another role that community colleges are
playing in redefining America’s future.
This role includes contract training,
small business assistance and local
economic planning.

EDUCATION IS A BRIDGE
A poem by Alicia Harvey-Smith
Education is a bridge, a structure that
stands before us
Carrying those who seek passage
to opportunity
A chance to grow, expanding capacity,
value added
Transcending the divide to knowledge
A bridge across the wet unknown
The barren and unproductive familiar
It carries us back
Reflecting on the lesson of what was
It carries us forward
Defining the now and the yet to come
This fixed link connects, the past,
present and future
Bonding each traveler to his dream
